Abstract
-Purpose:This study was to examine the associations between perceived loneliness among young adults and social, psychological, and emotional factors, and to derive policy and practical implications for restoring social connectedness. -Methods:This study analyzed secondary data from the 2024 Social Integration Survey conducted by the Korea Institute of Public Administration. The study participants included young adults aged 19 to 39 years. Perceived loneliness was measured using a self-reported questionnaire and divided into loneliness risk and non-risk groups. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, and logistic regression analysis. -Results:In the final model, lack of contact with family or relatives was associated with higher odds of loneliness (OR=1.787, 95% CI=1.216–2.626). Higher life satisfaction was associated with lower odds of loneliness (OR=0.887, 95% CI=0.790–0.995). Lower suicidal ideation (reverse-coded) (OR=0.338, 95% CI=0.277–0.411) and greater perceived social recognition (reverse-coded) (OR=0.360, 95% CI=0.294–0.440) were also significantly associated with reduced likelihood of loneliness. Contact with non-family members showed a significant association (OR=0.322, 95% CI=0.138–0.753). -Conclusion:Psychological and emotional factors, particularly life satisfaction and stress, were significant predictors of loneliness among young adults. These findings suggest that public health interventions focusing on improving psychological well-being and reducing stress may be effective strategies to prevent loneliness among young adults.
