Abstract
-Objective:Climate change mitigation and sustainability have become critical challenges in the healthcare sector; however, research on low-carbon healthcare remains fragmented across countries and topics. This study aimed to systematically map domestic and international research trends in low-carbon healthcare and to compare structural differences in research focus, methodologies, and greenhouse gas emission scopes. -Methods:This scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. Peer-reviewed studies published between 2013 and 2024 were identified through searches of KISS, RISS, PubMed, Scopus. The included studies were classified and analyzed by research, theme, methodological approach, and greenhouse gas emission scope. -Results:A total of 74 studies were included, comprising 17 domestic (23.0%) and 57 international (77.0%) publications. Domestic studies primarily focused on institutional and regulatory aspects, such as medical waste management and green certification of healthcare facilities, with a strong emphasis on Scope 3 emissions related to waste treatment. In contrast, international studies addressed a broader range of Scope 3 emissions, including carbon footprint quantification of surgical and clinical procedures, healthcare supply chains, and national healthcare systems, frequently using life cycle assessment and carbon footprint methodologies. -Conclusion:Low-carbon healthcare research in Korea remains constrained by limited data accessibility and analytical frameworks. Future research should expand toward quantitative, procedure-level carbon assessments, integrated data platforms, and empirical studies that link clinical practice with policy and institutional decision making.
