Abstract
During the modernization of the late 19th century, many Western concepts were transmitted to East Asia. This paper mainly discusses the acceptance and influence of East Asian countries. The modernization of East Asia, which began with the impact of the Western, Korea, China, and Japan began in different directions. Korea and China had become victims of the imperialist countries, and Japan has become the only modern independent country. The so-called translationism is one of the reasons for this result. The Japanese ruling class saw China’s opium war was forced by Western, began to look for independence, and worked hard to understand Western. At the same time, Japanese realism, which was exercised through the aide system, also helped the warriors to respond sensitively to changes in the times. As a result, Japan actively contacted Western cultural relics. This tangible effort continued to the Meiji government. They embodied the direction of change according to the Western model and established the banner of civilization. While criticizing Confucianism, the old vocabulary and concepts used in various fields such as politics and economy were replaced with those in Western, and the necessity of translation was greatly increased. At that time, the Japanese were translated in a wide variety of fields. In fact, the translation was done in a wide variety of ways and spread to Korea and China where there was no room to prepare for modernization, and it was established as a common modern language of East Asia. This was possible because the three East Asian countries shared the means of marking Chinese Character. However, as the influx of Western culture increased, the perception of language in East Asia shifted markedly toward the Phonocentrism. As a result, people have adopted more methods of translating foreign words into transliteration rather than creating and using translation vocabularies based on Chinese culture. This is a declaration that we will not try to understand other cultures in a subjective way, and there is a serious problem in that it will make Korean language like an empty shell.
