Abstract

Nepali has four stops – short lag, long lag, voiceless aspirated, and voiceless unaspirated – classified by voicing and aspiration, whereas Korean has three stops - lenis, fortis, and aspirated – by phonation type. This study aims to examine the production patterns of word-initial Korean stops by beginner-level Nepali learners of Korean. To this end, the Voice Onset Time (VOT) and fundamental frequency (F0) of word-initial Korean stops produced by Nepali learners were analyzed. The results show that fortis stops had shorter VOT than both lenis and aspirated stops, while there was no significant difference between lenis and aspirated stops. In terms of F0, there were no distinctive differences across places of articulation and phonation types. These results indicate that beginning Nepali learners of Korean distinguish fortis stops using VOT, but fail to distinguish between lenis and aspirated stops, which rely on F0 as a cue. Therefore, it is essential to provide instruction that helps Nepali learners produce F0 differences, since F0 plays a crucial role in distinguishing Korean word-initial stops for them.
