Abstract
This study aims to examine the pronunciation of Korean initial stops and affricates by Jordanian learners of Korean from an acoustic and phonetic perspective. To achieve this, the VOT of stops, the duration of affricates, and the f0 of the following vowel of the initial stops and affricates pronounced by the Jordanian learners were analyzed and compared with those of native Korean speakers. In the case of stops, the Jordanian learners’ aspirated consonants were distinguished from other types based on VOT, and lenis and fortis consonants were distinguished based on the f0 of the following vowel (lenis consonants < fortis consonants). On the other hand, in the case of affricates, the Jordanian learners’ aspirated consonants were distinguished only based on duration, with the three consonant types failing to be distinguished based on the f0 of the following vowel, which implies a lack of acoustic cues produced by the learners for distinguishing between lenis and fortis consonants. It turns out that, for the Jordanian learners, affricates were more challenging than stops. Compared with native Korean speakers, the primary error in the Jordanian learners' pronunciation was a tendency to pronounce lenis consonants with relatively shorter duration and higher pitch. These errors stem from the learners’ tendency to apply the stress features of their native language to the ‘tenseness’ of Korean fortis consonants, which prevents them from pronouncing lenis and fortis consonants distinctively.
