Abstract
The establishment of research centers for local studies at universities and within regional communities has become a nationwide trend in Korea. They compete to produce a variety of studies on local culture, quality of life, and identity for theoretical establishment on the local. This academic movement came from local communities’ change of understanding on the local and their enhanced capacity. This trend also reflects their aspiration to reinforce local individuality and competitiveness. As a historian specializing in Korean history, the author has actively contributed to this field through research in various areas of Gangwon Province, where local communities have demonstrated a sustained commitment to cultural engagement and place-based identity. Despite these developments, local studies have largely focused on quantitative expansion without establishing their own methodologies and theoretical frameworks. It seems that they followed and imitated the research system and approaches of existing Korean studies with no critical filtering process. It is time for both Korean studies and local studies-which have often imitated or adapted Korean studies-to develop comprehensive and original methodological frameworks, rather than merely aggregating the findings of adjacent disciplines. Local studies should promote a more systematic discipline (‘-ology’), not just staying at superficial and miscellaneous ‘studies.’ A discipline can be systemized when it is equipped with unique methodologies based upon supporting philosophy. Otherwise, local studies will remain as simply ‘various research on particular regions.’ Achieving this requires a clearly defined research object, original interdisciplinary methods, and theoretical grounding. Furthermore, nurturing expert scholars, building academic networks, ensuring long-term research funding, and institutional support through local legislation are vital. Finally, the academic community of Korean studies should serve as a stepping stone for the development of original research methodologies that are well adapted to continuous change. To prevent research from becoming mechanical, repetitive, or fragmented, the community must promote an academic culture that encourages researchers to conduct empirical and in-depth analyses and produce better outcomes that reflect such efforts.
