Abstract

This study explores university students’ perceptions of debate learning using generative AI chatbots. To investigate this, students participated in AI chatbot-assisted debate exercises, after which a Q-methodology analysis was conducted. The analysis identified three distinct learner typologies: (1) Efficient Self-Monitoring Type, (2) Real-World Debate-Oriented Type, and (3) Speech Anxiety Reduction Type, each characterized as follows. First, the Efficient Self-Monitoring Type consists of students who positively evaluated the chatbot’s effectiveness in reviewing their prepared arguments and rebuttals, as well as preparing for counterarguments. Second, the Real-World Debate-Oriented Type includes students who perceived AI-facilitated debate simulations as lacking the atmosphere, spontaneity, and interactive dynamics of real-world debates. Third, the Speech Anxiety Reduction Type consists of students who felt that AI-mediated debate practice reduced psychological pressure, allowing them to express their opinions on debate topics freely and with confidence. This study discussed teaching and learning strategies for speech and debate that respond to changes in the social environment caused by the rapid advancement and proliferation of artificial intelligence, based on the research findings.
