Abstract

This paper examines the current state of Korean ecological poetry translations and explores future directions for development. The paper surveys the overall landscape of Korean ecological poetry translations and discusses the characteristics of Korean ecological poetry, focusing on "Cracking the Shell," a representative translated collection of ecological poems. In addition, I discussed the tasks and development directions of ecological translation for global Korean literature. In "Cracking the Shell," the ecological poems of Choi Seung-ho, the youngest of the three poets, are placed at the beginning. Choi's ecological poetry is characterized by sharp criticism of material civilization, depicting the corruption of secular cities dominated by capitalism and the futile end of desire through grotesque imagery. Kim Ji-ha's ecological poetry is grounded in the consciousness that life and death are interconnected, and he particularly excels in expressing the communion between the inner self and external nature without separation. Jung Hyun-jong's ecological poetry is very vibrant and overflows with the joy of communicating with life. His poetry warns of the dangers of anthropocentrism and suggests a path of coexistence in harmony with nature. All three poets share the commonality of reaching a profound ecological consciousness through thorough reflection and criticism of reality, each developing their distinctive style of ecological poetry. Moreover, they demonstrate the unique characteristics of Korean ecological poetry in that they are based on distinctively Eastern Zen and Buddhist thinking. Including these three poets, Korea has many outstanding ecological poets, but it is difficult to say that they have been sufficiently introduced to the world stage. Above all, there is a need for more active translation of ecological poetry anthologies that can concisely introduce Korean ecological poetry. Additionally, it would be meaningful to compile a separate anthology of Korean women's ecological poetry, which could highlight the unique characteristics and values that only Korean women poets can demonstrate. Moving forward, there needs to be more diverse translators participating in the field of ecological poetry, and subsequent generations should continuously emerge to vitalize this field. Since ecological poetry is an area that can realize the potential of global Korean literature more broadly than any other field, the translation and introduction of various ecological poetry texts by diverse translators should be further expanded. The process of translating ecological poetry requires close cooperation and collaboration between translators and Korean literature researchers. The expansion of Korean ecological poetry translation will serve as a significant opportunity for Korean literature to contribute to the realm of world literature.
