Abstract

I examine what kind of reflection and outlook the Korean poetry is doing on the deepening climate crisis in this paper. This is because it is important to cultivate ecological sensitivity through literary works in order to awaken the climate crisis that is so huge and complex that it is difficult to realize and seek change. For this purpose, I analyze the ecological sensitivity to the climate crisis and aspects of aesthetics for climate-related poems that were rarely illuminated compared to climate novels. In the poems dealing with the climate crisis, climate appears as the main character, not as the background, revealing its overwhelming power. These are abnormal weather phenomena such as heavy snow, abnormal weather, and loss of glaciers due to global warming. Poems that reproduce various phenomena of the climate crisis express the crisis situation in an intuitive and sensuous way. Poems paying attention to the causes of the climate crisis are pointed out as the fundamental causes of abnormal weather, causing inequality and exploitation, and destroying the balance of nature. Poets’ eyes, which dig into the source of the problem, are not only cool and perspective, but also look at the relationship between cause and effect with macroscopic imagination. The poetic outlook for the future society that the climate crisis will bring is ominous and negative, revealing dystopian imaginations of the Earth. On the other hand, it shows the awakening to slow down the pace of excessive development and coexist with nature by recognizing the deepening climate crisis. The climate crisis reproduced in Korean poetry stimulates ecological sensitivity more than clear scientific facts, allowing us to accept it in terms of realization and look back on the relationship between humans and nature. The rich poetic sensitivity that comes from poetic expressions such as personification, metaphors, and symbols expands empathy, allowing humans to accept the climate crisis as a problem of the community of life together with nature. Dynamic poetic imagination allows us to see the history of mankind and nature with a macroscopic view, so that we can respond to crises and seek change.
