초록

아리스토텔레스는 『명제론』에서 “Homer is a poet”으로부터 “Homer is”가 추론될 수 없다고 주장한다.

Abstract

Aristotle claims in De Interpretatione ch. 11, that “Homer is” does not follow from “Homer is a poet”. This could be taken as evidence that he clearly distinguishes the copula and the existential predicate. But in Categories ch. 10, he implies that “Socrates is” does follow from “Socrates is sick”, and it is problematic how this squares with the passage in De Interpretatione ch. 11. Even the better ones among the attempts to resolve this incompatibility have failed because they regard the “is” in “Homer is” as expressing categorical existence. The alleged incompatibility disappears if we understand that the “is” or the Greek word “esti” means “is alive” in this context. From the general fact that Homer is a poet, we cannot infer that he is alive. In contrast, to be in the state of being sick, one has to be alive. The reason Aristotle offers for the difference is that the “is” in “Homer is a poet” is predicated of Homer only derivatively. If we assume that the verb “einai” expresses a kind of non-categorical existence both in complete sentences and incomplete sentences, Aristotle’s claims can be best explained.
