Abstract
In this paper, I compare the Greek word ‘einai’ and the Korean word ‘itta’ together with the English words ‘be’ and ‘exist’. ‘Exist’ and ‘itta’ are different in the sense that the former is a categorical concept and the latter represents a non-categorical concept of existence. But since the difference is very subtle, Korean readers often misunderstand claims about existence for claims about ‘itta’, and vice versa. Likewise, if ‘einai’ represents a non-categorical concept of existence like ‘itta’, as I argue it does, Western readers may have misunderstood the true meaning of ‘einai’, because modern Western languages lack any concept corresponding to the non-categorical concept of existence. In locative sentences, you use ‘itta’ in Korean while you cannot use ‘exist’ in English. Since ‘itta’ represents a non-categorical existence, you can assert ‘itta’ with regard only to specific places. But you cannot do that with ‘exist’. You use the locative copula ‘is’ in such cases, and a copula has only grammatical functions and lacks any concrete meaning. Although you can use the locution ‘there is’ in asserting existence of a certain thing in a certain place, in several important respects the locution does not represent a non-categorical concept of existence. A ‘there is’ sentence and a corresponding sentence with the locative copula ‘is’ are translated into the same Korean sentence using ‘itta’ and the same Greek sentence using ‘einai’. Also, in possessive sentences ‘itta’ and ‘einai’ are used in Korean and Greek. In the case of nominal sentences, if Korean ‘ida’ and ‘~ro itta’ express the idea of identification, a kind of non-categorical existence is meant here as in locative and possessive sentences in Korean. And several facts about ‘einai’ in nominal sentences suggest that it also plays the role of identification. In all those cases ‘einai’ seems to mean almost the same as ‘itta’. But in adjectival sentences, ‘einai’ is used in Greek but there is no corresponding expression in Korean. Adjectives in Korean are like verbs: they can be predicates by themselves. The fact that Greek adjectives are like nouns and Korean ones are like verbs presents a serious obstacle to a clear understanding of some parts of Greek philosophy for Korean readers. With the exception of this aspect, however, taking ‘einai’ as a non-categorical concept of existence as ‘itta’ is will help explain away a lot of interpretative difficulties concerning the ambiguity of ‘einai’.
