전경무의 생애 및 해방공간(1945-1948) 스포츠외교 활동에 관한 연구

본 연구는 해방공간(1945–1948)이라는 역사적 과도기 속에서 한국 스포츠외교의 형성과정과 그 중심 인물인 전경무의 생애, 외교 활동, 스포츠 사상을 종합적으로 고찰하였다. 전경무는 일제강점기 미주 한인 사회에서 독립운동, 교육 및 언론 활동을 통해 민족 자각을 형성하였으며, 해방 이후 조선체육회 산하 올림픽대책위원회의 외교사절로서 국제올림픽위원회(IOC) 가입 교섭을 주도하였다. 그는 정부 수립 이전의 공적 외교 부재 상황 속에서 스포츠를 민간 외교의 수단으로 활용하며, 청년 계몽과민족 재건, 국가 정체성 확립의 실천 도구로 인식하였다. 본 연구는 브런디지컬렉션, 공문서, 구술 기록, 당시 신문 사료 등의1차 사료를 토대로 전경무의 외교 전략과 스포츠사상의 역사적 의의를 규명하였다. 그 결과, 전경무의 활동은 대한민국 정부수립 이전 한국이 국제 스포츠 질서에 자주적 주체로 인정받는 계기를 형성한 사례로, 한국 스포츠외교사 및 민간 외교 연구의주요한 기초 자료로 평가된다.
Abstract
This study examines the development of sports diplomacy in Korea during the post-liberation period (1945–1948) through the diplomatic activities and sports philosophy of J. Kyuang Dann. As a Korean independence activist in the United States during the colonial period, Dann engaged in political advocacy, education, and journalism, laying the foundation for his later diplomatic role. After Korea’s liberation, he was dispatched as a diplomatic envoy to the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC), leading negotiations for membership in the International Olympic Committee (IOC) before establishing a formal government. Dann viewed sports as physical activity and a strategic tool for youth enlightenment, national reconstruction, and the assertion of national identity on the international stage. Drawing on primary sources such as the Brundage Collection, official documents, oral histories, and contemporary newspaper archives, this study analyzes Dann’s multilevel diplomatic strategies and the historical significance of his sports philosophy. These findings highlight Dann's pivotal contribution to Korea's presence in the global sports arena, offering foundational insights for research on civilian-led diplomacy and sports policy.
