Abstract
This study investigates whether return, volatility and volume change when stock prices approach or break through 52-week highs and lows in Korean stock market. Further, this study attempts to explain evidences and results by the an anchoring theory. To show the relation between return, volatility, volume and 52-week highs and lows, we use a framework of mean and variance models and volume models. Our findings can be summarized as follows. First, in the mean and variance models, the return coefficients significantly increase when approaching a 52-week highs and decrease when approaching a 52-week lows. This results suggest that approaching of a 52-week highs and lows respectively work as momentum effect in Korean stock market. Second, in the volume models, the volume coefficients do not show any significant relations between volume and approaching of 52-week highs and lows. However, the volume coefficients significantly increase when break through a 52-week highs and lows. Especially the volume models show that coefficients of breakthrough a 52-week lows is higher than that of breakthrough a 52-week highs. These results are consistent with anchoring theory.
