Abstract
The present study investigates impacts/effects of a forced transition to online learning due to the COVID-19 on English-medium instruction at university. Focusing on an English-mediated business course at a university in Korea, we examined how the online environment impacted upon the delivery of content information and interactions among class participants. The data came from various sources, including class observation, student survey and semi-structured interviews with the instructor. The results showed that the students had relatively more difficulties in keeping their attention during the given online class than in previously experienced offline courses. Interestingly, however, there was no significant difference in the level of content understanding and in overall satisfaction with the course. We also found that synchronous text-based online chat promoted the students’ participation and instructor-student interaction. The use of text chat also lowered the students’ level of anxiety and compensated for their lack of English skills.
