Abstract

This study examined the effects of scaffolding provided by learning assistants in a visual-auditory sensory substitution technology (VASS)-based shape learning program for learners with visual impairments and explored learners’ perceptions of different scaffolding types. An ABAB single-subject research design (SSRD) was employed with ten participants including a pretest, module-based learning, a post test, and a delayed test. The learning content consisted of 25 geometric shapes organized into four modules by difficulty. Scaffolding was designed in four forms-conceptual, strategic, metacognitive, and motivational-and provided based on predefined guidelines and learners’ observed difficulties. Results showed that all participants demonstrated improved performance during the scaffolding phase compared to baseline, with learning outcomes maintained in the post test and delayed test, although temporary declines were observed in the high-difficulty module. Survey and interview findings indicated high perceived scaffolding effectiveness, particularly metacognitive support, which enhanced conceptual understanding and learning persistence. Overall, the findings suggest that scaffolding in VASS based learning improves performance and learning retention, highlighting the importance of adaptive scaffolding designs.
