Abstract
This study examines the poems of Baekha Yun Sun(1680–1741) as contained in Baekhaseonsaengyugo and Baekhajip, comparing the editorial structures and compositional differences between the two collections, and analyzing the editorial principles and intentions of the later compiler, Yun Yong-gu (1853–1939). Baekhaseonsaengyugo is a handwritten manuscript that focuses on the collection of draft materials rather than systematic organization. Although it attempts to classify Yun’s writings by generation, chronology, and literary form, it lacks overall coherence and completeness. In contrast, Baekhajip, published in 1927, was reorganized by Yun Yong-gu, who collated and refined Baekhaseonsaengyugo together with additional works discovered later, focusing on politically neutral and stylistically refined poems. Under the two editorial principles of “Sanryongchugan” (eliminating excess and pursuing conciseness) and “Jungongji cheonggae ji ui” (preserving and revealing Yun Sun’s purity and integrity), Yun selected 90 poems from 80 titles out of the original 698 poems in 465 titles, excluding 609 poems that were deemed redundant or problematic. In particular, he omitted poems associated with figures involved in political controversies such as the ShinimOksa(1721–22) and EulhaeOksa(1755), thereby emphasizing Yun Sun’s moral character and scholarly dignity. Additionally, 56 poems from 40 new titles, including those related to Yun’s diplomatic mission to Beijing and the Nasanhoe poetry gatherings, were newly included, expanding the human and multidimensional aspects of Yun’s poetic world. Ultimately, Baekhajip reflects Yun Yong-gu’s attempt to refine and reinterpret Yun Sun’s literature and character based on the traditional values and literary consciousness of late Joseon scholar-officials. This work thus illustrates how the editorial consciousness of the late Joseon literati was inherited and transformed in the process of early modern anthologizing.
