Abstract
This study aims to examine the therapeutic functions of plants and the principles of planting design in therapeutic gardens, providing practical foundational data for designing healing environments. To achieve this, previous studies related to therapeutic gardens and plant use were analyzed, focusing on plants’ sensory stimulation capabilities, contributions to biodiversity, and strategies for substituting toxic species. The findings indicate that plants in therapeutic gardens stimulate the five human senses—sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch—thus promoting psychological and physical healing. Furthermore, five key planting design principles were identified: consideration of site-specificity, user characteristics, environmental preferences of plants, and ease of maintenance. This research offers plant selection criteria and design guidelines applicable to therapeutic gardens in Korea, contributing to the groundwork for future empirical studies.
