초록

This study systematically analyzed the research trends in Korean water polo from 1986 to 2024 by reviewing 53 academic articles and theses. The research was classified by period, publication type, field, methodology, subject, and sport type, with fractional counting employed to address multiple-response data. The results indicate a gradual increase in both the volume and sophistication of research, particularly since 2020. However, more than 70% of the studies concentrated on exercise physiology, sports psychology, and measurement, while 92.5% adopted quantitative approaches, revealing a notable methodological imbalance. Research has predominantly focused on elite athletes, with limited studies on coaches, referees, or non-athlete populations, and few comparative studies across different sports. These findings highlight the necessity to diversify research topics and methods and to broaden the inclusion of various stakeholders. This study provides an academic contribution by systematically mapping four decades of Korean water polo research, identifying structural gaps, and suggesting directions for future research. Future studies should expand the range of subjects and methodologies and strengthen international comparisons and standardization.
