Abstract

The purpose of this study is to confirm how the match characteristic changed according to revision of game rules of water polo and find strategy to operate match. Match record from preliminary rounds to the final rounds of water polo in 2017 World Championships for Swimming which is before changing match rules and in 2019 World Championships for Swimming which is after changing match rules; 96 matches in total is selected to research material. As research variables, 21 attack variables, 5 exclusion variables, and 3 other variables; 29 variables were selected and SPSS Ver 25.0 statics package were used to carry out verification of independent sample. All the statistical significance level was set to .05. According to the result of attack variables, Action shot trial was increased after rules revision, but the success rate was decreased. Extra player shot’s goal and trial were increased after rules revision, but the success rate was decreased. Free throw shot’s goal and trial were decreased after rules revision, and penalty shot’s goal, trial and success rate were all increased. Counter attack shot’s goal and trial were increased after rules revision, and overall shot’s goal and trial were increased. According to the result of exclusion variable, 20 seconds exclusion in the field was increased after rules revision while Penalty was decreased. According to the result of other variable, Blocked shots were increased after rules revision. To summarize the strategy of match operation according to the match rules revision of this study, first, tactics should be used by applying Pick(Down-pick, Up-pick, Cross-pick), Cross Drive, Drive when attacking. This can induce Penalty foul and Exclusion foul, and through this, effective attacking strategy can be used. Second, to strengthen the defensive performance, training and strategy should be reinforced to perform applied movement about block movement and defensive movement. It is thought to be a strategy to decrease penalty foul allowance and defend efficiently the opponent’s attack at the same time. This conclusion is expected to be used as a basic data to improve performance to water polo players and coaches.
