Abstract
It has been reported that a significantly increased number of people are suffering from various mental health problems during the long-term pandemic of COVID-19. In this context, the 36-item COVID Stress Scales (CSS) were recently developed by Taylor and colleagues (2020) to measure COVID-19-related stress and anxiety responses. This scale has been drawing much attention for its utility in research and clinical settings. The current study examined the factor structure, internal consistency, and convergent and discriminant validity of the CSS in a sample of 527 Korean adults. Confirmatory factor analysis was applied to compare and evaluate the fit of the alternative factor models, based on the original conceptualization and factor structure of the CSS reported by the original developers and the results reported in previous studies. Among them, a 6-factor model consisting of fear of COVID-19-related dangerousness, fears of socioeconomic consequences, fear of contamination, COVID-19 xenophobia, symptoms of traumatic stress about COVID-19, and compulsive checking and reassurance seeking, provided the best fit to the collected data. The internal consistency of the CSS was good, and their convergent and discriminant validity was supported. These results support the CSS as a reliable and valid measure of various stress and anxiety responses related to COVID-19 experienced by Korean adults.
