Abstract
In Julius Caesar, the power struggle between two factions can be interpreted in terms of political philosophy as a confrontation between two ideological traditions: one rooted in Plato (c. 428/7–348/7 BC), representing political metaphysics or political deontology, and the other derived from Niccolò Machiavelli (1469–1527), representing Machiavellianism or political pragmatism. In the play, the two opposing political ideologies are embodied by the characters Brutus and Antony. Brutus, the leader of the republican faction, was more of a scholar than a politician, and is known to have been deeply influenced by the theories of Plato and the ancient Academy. Like his academic leanings, Brutus in Julius Caesar consistently upholds political principles rather than being swayed by pragmatic interests. Until the very end, he maintains an idealistic and noble posture. In contrast, Antony excels in political cunning and demonstrates a willingness to use any means necessary to gain and maintain power. He is arguably the most striking example among the characters of pragmatic, results-oriented politics in Julius Caesar. The following analysis will focus on the political language and behavior of Brutus and Antony, who offer the most meaningful insights into political leadership within the play. By closely observing their words and actions, we may begin to infer what qualities Shakespeare envisioned as essential for a successful political leader.
