Abstract
This paper examines how the image of “science” was visually represented and consumed in the mass media of colonial Korea, at the intersection of colonial power and nationalist modernization discourse. Rather than reflecting the actual scientific or technological capabilities of the time, science and invention were portrayed as symbols of modernity or utopian fantasy in newspapers, magazines, and advertisements. In the 1910s and 1920s, craft-like inventions and improved farming tools were framed as scientific, while in the 1930s, visual elements such as elite inventors, laboratories, and technical diagrams emerged as signs of “modern” science. These representations, however, were largely disconnected from the reality of scientific knowledge or practice in colonial Korea. Instead, they functioned as visual codes of trust, belief, and progress. By analyzing the visual strategies of scientific representation and their ideological underpinnings, this study critically reflects on the cultural construction of science and modernity in a colonial context.
