Abstract
This study investigates the origins, transmission, and performance history of Han Seong-jun’s Hakmu, aiming to reveal the historical imperatives placed upon the work and how tradition and modernity have undergone a dialectical process—thesis, antithesis, and synthesis—leading to its current form. Han Seong-jun’s Hakmu premiered on July 11, 1936, at Bumingwan during the “Traditional Joseon Dance Performance.” Originally performed as a solo or trio dance, it embodied Han’s yearning to artistically restore the lost traditions of the royal court. Though neglected after Korea’s liberation, Hakmu was revived in the 1970s amid a nationalist movement that sought cultural identity in ancient origins. With philosophical symbolism rooted in Taoism and shamanism, the dance was recontextualized as a form of court dance. Today’s Hakmu as court dance has evolved into a dialectical method that interweaves the aesthetics of the mid-Joseon Akhak Gwebeom, modern choreography, and contemporary reinterpretation.
