Abstract

This study examines the modern Japanese-language magazines Tōyō no Hikari (1937–1945) and Kokumin Bungaku (1939–1945), published in colonial Korea during the wartime regime, to analyze how cartoons, advertisements, and photographs represented the period’s consciousness and cultural codes. Modern magazines functioned not only as media for information but also as visual arenas for shaping social discourse and constructing modern identity. In the colonial context, they became vital instruments for disseminating imperial ideology and mobilizing subjects under Japan’s wartime system. The analysis reveals that cartoons gradually shifted from social satire to political propaganda, visualizing imperial values such as loyalty, thrift, and war cooperation. Advertisements, covering pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, films, and finance, reflected the fusion of modern consumer culture with national policies. Particularly, female-oriented advertisements embodied wartime motherhood ideology through slogans like “Healthy Mothers, Healthy Soldiers.” Photographs of the Emperor, colonial officials, and military scenes further visualized imperial authority, reinforcing the subjects’ psychological subordination to the Empire. Ultimately, the visual images within these magazines served as complex cultural texts where imperial ideology and colonial modernity intersected. They reveal how visual media functioned as ideological apparatuses that internalized imperial values, gender norms, and wartime nationalism, providing significant insight into the visual layers of colonial modernity.
