이 논의의 목적은 형용사 ‘멀다’의 용법 중에서 ‘수준이나 정도가 다른 것에 미치기에 부족하다’의 의미로 쓰이는 ‘멀었다’에 사용되는 선어말 어미 ‘-었-’의 문법 의미 기능 규명을 통해 선어말 어미 ‘-었-’의 문법 의미 기능의 특징을 새롭게 규명하는 것이다. 선어말 어미 ‘-었-’의 기능에 대한 지금까지의 연구를 보면 대체로 시제(tense) 범주에서 ‘과거’를 나타내는 기능이나, 상(aspect) 범주에서 ‘완료’로 보는 것이 가장 많았다. 이 외에도 양태(modality)의 범주로는 ‘확신’의 기능으로 보기도 한다. 그렇지만 ‘멀었다’에 사용되는 선어말 어미 ‘-었-’은 기존의 연구에서 다루었던 그 어떤 문법 범주로도 설명하지 못하였다. 이번 논의에서는 기존의 연구로 설명하지 못하는 한계를 분명히 정리하였고 이 문제를 해결하기 위해 우선 사전 의미 기술에 대해 분석했다. 그리고 해석론적 관점에서 ‘멀었다’의 쓰임의 특징을 밝히고, 이런 특징을 갖게 된 통시적 특성도 분석해 보았다. 이번 연구를 통해 선어말 어미 ‘-었-’의 의미 기능 중에 현재 상태를 나타냈었던 예전의 용법이 아직까지도 계승되어 쓰인다는 점을 확인했다. 그리고 ‘아직 멀었다’ 표현에 나타나는 특성이, 실제 용법 분석을 통해 [현재 상태]뿐만 아니라 [목표성]이 있고, ‘멀다’가 형용사이지만 목표를 향한 변화를 전제로 한 동사적 특성이 있는 [지향성]이 있을 때에 ‘-었-’과 결합하여 쓰임을 밝혔다.
Abstract
This study aims to examine why it is difficult to explain the pre-final ending “-eoss-” from the grammatical semantic function perspective; it has been frequently discussed and is insufficient to reach a different degree of use of the adjective “meoleossda.” The study aims to identify the features of the grammatical semantic function of the pre-final ending “-eoss-” by examining its usewhen it in “meoleossda.” Among studies on the function of the pre-final ending “-eoss-,”and those representing the “past” tense or the “complete” aspect are most common. Some studies have attempted to see these in a separate or integrated view. It is also viewed as a function of “confidence” as a category of modality. However, the pre-final ending “-eoss-” used in “meoleossda” could not be explained by any of the grammatical categories covered in previous studies. To analyze this problem, the limitations that cannot be explained by the existing grammar categories have been clearly summarized in this study. I first looked at the dictionary semantic description, clarified the characteristics of the use of “meoleossda” from an interpretive point of view, and analyzed the synchronic characteristics. This study confirmed that it is appropriate to assume that the old usage, which indicated the current state of the meaning function of the pre-final ending “-eoss-,” is still being used. In addition, through the analysis of the actual usage of the characteristics that appear in the expression “ajik meoleossda,” there is not only a present state, but also a goal, and, although “meolda” is an adjective, as an orientation it has a verbal characteristic that presupposes a change toward a goal. It is used in combination with “-eoss-” when it is there.
