Issues and Problems in the 20th Century Malaysian History

초록

본 소고는 21세기를 맞이해 지난 세기 100년 동안 말레이시아 역사의 주요 논점들을 시기별로 정리하고 그 문제점 및 그 동안 역사학자들이 간과해온 새로운 주제들을 부각시켜 20세기 말레이시아 역사 연구의 새로운 이정표를 세우려는 시도이다. 20세기 초 말레이 반도 고무 산업에 대한 연구는 대부분 인도인들의 역할에 초점이 맞추어져 있다. 반면 고무 산업에 말레이인, 중국인, 자바인들의 적극적인 참여와 그들의 역할에 대한 연구는 미진한 상태이다. 이 시기의 교육과 종교에 대해 비교적 많은 연구가 진행되었다. 그러나 교육과 관련해 학교가 실질적으로 어떻게 운영되었는지에 대한 연구는 별다른 주목을 받지 못했다. 특히 학교 간 스포츠 시합을 통한 교류가 활발했고 그 활동이 2차 세계대전이전 말레이 민족의식의 발전에 분명 기여했음에도 불구하고 학생들의 과외활동에 대한 연구가 거의 전무한 실정이다. 종교분야의 경우 특정 종교인의 활동 및 역할에 대한 연구를 넘어 전반적인 사회연구 속에서 종교를 조명하는 것이 필요하다. 이 밖에도 20세기 초 철도, 항만 등 인프라의 건설 및 도시화와 사회변동과의 상관관계에 대한 연구가 바람직하다. 양차대전 사이 역사가들이 집중적인 관심을 보인 주제는 중국인의 정치활동, 영국 식민지배 하 말레이 반도의 행정발전, 말레이 민족의식의 발전 그리고 주석과 고무 산업이었다. 이 시기에 역사가들이 간과해온 다른 주제 중엔 파인애플과 팜 오일 산업의 발전, 일본인의 경제활동의 증가, 교육의 발전 그리고 스포츠 활동 등이 있다. 일본 점령기는 자료의 부족으로 여러 면에서 연구가 답보 상태이다. 특히 점령기의 사회상에 대한 연구가 가장 미진하다. 이를 위해 머지않아 세상을 떠날 개인들의 경험을 인터뷰 등을 통해 기록해 출판하는 일이 시급하다. 일제 하 말레이 반도의 행정 대부분을 담당했던 말레이 공무원들과 그들의 역할에 대한 연구 또한 주목을 받아야할 주제이다. 1930년대부터 가시화되기 시작한 중국인과 말레인 간의 대립과 반목이 이 시기에 더욱 증폭된 원인과 독립이후 국민국가 건설과정에 미친 영향에 대한 연구 또한 주목해야할 주제이다. 전 후 시기 1946년에 말라야 연합(Malayan Union)에 조직적으로 대응하기 위해 결성된 암노(UMNO)의 탄생은 사실상 1939년 에 개최된 전말라야말레이의회(All-Malaya Malay Congress)에 뿌리를 두고 있다는 사실을 간과해서는 안된다. 암노와 관련해 가장 주목 받아온 정치인은 다또 온 빈 자파르였다. 그러나 사실상 암노의 초대 의장은 뜽꾸 이스마일이었으며 그의 중요한 역할에도 불구하고 여전히 전기(biography)조차 집필되지 않은 상황이다. 중국인 공산당의 무장봉기로 비상사태가 선포된 암울한 이 시기에 하키, 테니스 등 스포츠 조직이 활성화 되어 많은 운동경기가 열렸다는 사실 또한 흥미로운 연구 주제이다. 1957년 독립이후 말레이시아 국가건설 과정에서 가장 큰 비중을 차지한 것은 경제발전이었다. 이 주제와 함께 말레이시아 연방의 탄생을 둘러싸고 빚어진 인도네시아 및 싱가포르와의 대립 등 외교관계 또한 여전히 역사가들의 관심을 기다리고 있다. 동시대인 1980년대와 90년대에 관해 IT 등 기술혁명과 이로 인한 사회변동 전반에 대한 연구 또한 역사가들이 관심을 보여야 할 시점이다.
