Abstract

Studies on Indian Nationalism has been so far undertaken mainly on the cooperative Nationalism such as the Indian National Congress and its leaders. Other trends of Indian Nationalism than cooperative Nationalism lacks quantity and variety in their studies. This research aims at proving radical or ‘Revolutionary’ Nationalism in Malaya region during the Japanese occupation in the first half of the 1940s. I reviewed the influences caused by the formation and activities of the Indian Independence League(IIL) and the Indian Natioanl Army(INA) on the Indian community in Malaya through the British and the Azad Hindu Provisional Government's sources. Collective experiences and strengthening of national consciousness among the Indian community affected its characteristics in general during the Japanese occupation and later. The IIL rapidly grew and stood as a central organization of the Indian community providing political and economic protection to the community during the first INA period until the end of 1942. The influences of the INA was comparatively limited among civilians. The period of the second INA from 1943 witnessed the arrival of Subhas Chandra Bose and the growing influences of the INA among the Indian community in general. The main function of the IIL turned to the recruiting for the INA from civilians and the raising funds. Indian community became providers of human and material resources to the ‘freedom struggle’. Many civilians experienced the organizational life and were inspired by the revolutionary nationalistic ideas through education and propaganda. The organizational experiences and spread of nationalism influenced the various strata of Indian society, which made active organizational attempts possible among the community after the World War II. The collective experiences of the other ethnic communities during the Japanese occupation affected the Malaysian multi-ethnic society in post-war period. Major ethnic groups in Malaya underwent the various experiences in the 1940s' changing international situations. The strong tendency of nationalism can be found in all three major ethnic groups, namely the Malays, the Chinese, and the Indians, while they underwent different experiences according to their respective relationships with the Japanese. Three different ethnic groups remained as of entirely different nature. Different experiences of each ethnic groups during the World War II provided important clue to understand the characteristics of the Malaysian multi-ethnic society and its three major ethnic groups after the independence of Malaysia.
