2차 세계대전이전 신 말레이 지식인의 출현과 성장 양차대전 사이 서구 식민지배 하의 동남아는 여러 면에서 역동의 시기 (age in motion)였다. 특히 20세기 초부터 전통 사회질서와는 독립적으로 출현하기 시작해 1930년대 초에 이르러 새로운 사회계층으로 성장한 신지식인 집단은 자신들 국가의 미래에 대한 여러 비전을 제시했을 뿐 만 아니라 그 비전은 이후 동남아 국민국가(nation-state) 발전의 이념적 초석이 되었다. 말레이시아 역시 그 같은 시대적 흐름에 예외적이지 않았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 말레이시아의 독립과정이 다른 동남아 국가, 특히 혁명을 통해 독립을 이룬 베트남과 이웃 인도네시아와 비교해 볼 때 그다지 극적이지 못한 이유로 신 말레이 지식인의 이념적 논쟁은 학계의 별다른 주목을 받지 못했다. 이 같은 문제의식을 바탕으로 본 소고는 2차 세계대전이전 신 말레이 지식인 집단, 즉 종교교육 신지식인, 영어교육 신지식인, 말레이교육 신지식인의 출현과 성장을 면밀히 고찰해 20세기 동남아 지성사의 한 공백을 메우려 시도한다. 이를 위해 본 소고는 첫째, 신 말레이 지식인의 출현과 성장은 영국 식민지 교육의 산물이기 보다는 새로운 식민지 환경에 대한 말레이인의 창조적 대응(creative reaction)의 결과, 즉 자생적(autonomous)이었음을 밝힌다. 둘째, 세 부류의 신 말레이 지식인 집단의 사회적 출신배경(귀족과 평민)과 그로 인한 그들의 말레이 사회의 미래에 대한 비전의 공통점과 상이점 그리고 그들의 이합집산을 분석하고, 끝으로 그 비전이 독립이후 최근까지 현대 말레이시아 국민국가 발전의 이념적 원동력임을 밝힌다.
