Abstract
This study examined how media representations of gender influence individuals’ gender role stereotypes and expectations, with particular focus on character gender and behavioral outcomes in a soccer entertainment program. We employed a 2 (gender: man vs. woman) × 2 (behavioral outcomes: success vs. failure) between-subjects factorial design with 293 participants aged 20–59 in the Republic of Korea. Penalty shootout scenes from The Shooting Stars and Our Town’s Physical Variety–Soccer Episode served as experimental stimuli in a single experiment. Results showed that participants exposed to woman characters in soccer entertainment programs experienced a reduction in gender role stereotypes about men, and their post-exposure stereotype levels were lower than those of participants in other groups. Gender role stereotypes about men increased gender role expectations for both men and women, whereas gender role stereotypes about women decreased these expectations. The findings provides empirical evidence of the effects of media representations on gender schema such as gender role stereotypes and expectations. Moreover, these results suggest that the relationships between gender role stereotypes and expectations could have been associated with patriarchy or perceptions of married women, commonly referred to as ajumma in Korea. This study highlights the role of media portrayals in promoting media diversity and offers theoretical and practical insights into counter-stereotypical portrayals of gender roles. By shedding light on the nuanced effects of media portrayals, it advances our understanding of how gender stereotypes and expectations are formed and how they can potentially be mitigated.
