Abstract

This article provides a theoretical exploration for understanding the publics and movements formed around specific events in today’s digital media environment as forms of ‘media witnessing.’ Over the past decades, media witnessing has become a major communication mode through which we encounter particular events or conflicts. However, academic work on this topic remains limited in Korean media studies. This article examines key studies that have explored media witnessing in European media research since the 2000s. Unlike traditional media witnessing theories that primarily focus on the truthfulness of testimony and the ethical subjectivity of witnesses, this study traces the evolution of alternative approaches that understand media witnessing as a sociotechnical mode. This article traces the evolution of alternative media witnessing research into three modes. First, in the television era’s ‘media witnessing as receptivity,’ it addresses how ordinary viewers are transformed into witnesses of distant events. Second, in the mobile phone era’s ‘connected collective witnessing,’ it explores how individually produced images are circulated and how human and non-human agencies become entangled. Third, in ‘affective witnessing,’ it illuminates the mechanisms through which specific publics and movements are generated through the display of vulnerable bodies, and discusses how witnessing expands from political practice to economic practice in the process of platformization. This paper aims to contribute to understanding how specific publics and movements are generated through witnessing as a mediator in the changing digital media environment.
