Abstract

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine research trends and characteristics of artificial intelligence(AI)-based interventions for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities by reviewing domestic and international experimental studies and evaluating their methodological quality. [Method] nineteen experimental research articles published domestically and internationally between 2016 and 2025 were selected for review. Research trends, intervention components, and intervention effects were analyzed, and the methodological quality of the research was evaluated based on the Council for Exceptional Childrec(CEC) quality indicators. [Results] First, analysis by publication year indicated that the highest research activity occurred in 2024–2025. Second, regarding participant characteristics, individuals with autism spectrum disorder account for the largest proportion, and studies using mixed grade levels were most common, participants with mild to moderate intellectual and autism spectrum disabilities were most frequently represented. Third, randomized controlled trials were the most frequently employed research design. Fourth, most studies were conducted in school settings, with the number of intervention sessions ranging from 1-10 and 21~30 and the majority of interventionists being teachers. Fifth, in terms of intervention tools, intelligent robots were most commonly used, with independent variables primarily related to academics, communication, and social competence, while dependent variables were mostly associated with social skills. Lastly, quality analysis showed that five studies met over 80% of the total CEC quality indicators. [Conclusion] Based on these results, this study discusses the key characteristics and limitations of AI-based interventions for children and adolescents with developmental disabilities and offers suggestions for future research.
