부사 ‘還’의 척도 의미 고찰

부사 ‘還’의 다양한 의미가 서로 어떻게 관련되는지에 관해 지금껏 연구가 매우 적은 편이었다. 본고는 척도 면에서 ‘還’의 의미를 일관되게 설명하려 한 두 연구에 주목하였다. Liu(2000)와 高增霞(2002)는 ‘還’의 다양한 의미가 모두 ‘지속’을 기본 의미로 하고 ‘척도상 높음’을 나타낸다고 보았다. 그러나 본고는 ‘還’의 적지 않은 용례에서 ‘還’가 ‘척도상 낮음’의 의미로 해석됨을 확인할 수 있었다. ‘척도상 높음’으로 해석되는 ‘還’는 문장이 나타내는 상황과 비교되는 상황이 동일한 상태를 나타내는 것으로 해석되며, ‘척도상 낮음’으로 해석되는 ‘還’는 문장이 나타내는 상황과 그와 대비되는 상황이 서로 다른 상태를 나타내는 것으로 해석된다. Liu(2000)와 高增霞(2002)는 ‘그런대로’ 의미의 ‘還’ 역시 ‘척도상 높음’을 나타내는 것으로 보았다. 그러나 ‘그런대로’ 의미의 ‘還’가 있는 문장의 상황과 그와 대비되는 상황은 서로 다른 상태로 해석되기 때문에, 본고에서는 ‘그런대로’ 의미의 ‘還’가 ‘척도상 낮음’을 나타내는 것으로 보고 있다.
Abstract
Until now, research has been very rare on how the various meanings of adverb '還' are related. This paper noted the studies of Liu (2000) and 高增霞 (2002), both of which believe that '還' is indicative of ‘high degree in scale’. However, we found that in many sentences with '還', '還' indicates ‘low degree in scale’. Therefore, we believe that '還' indicates ‘high degree’ and ‘low degree’ in scale. When '還' indicates ‘high degree’ in scale, the sentence with '還' and the other sentence compared to the sentence are interpreted to have the same attribute, and when '還' indicates the low degree in scale, the sentence with '還' and the other sentence compared to the sentence are interpreted to have the different attribute. The above two studies also believe that when '還' means 'moderately', it also indicates ‘high degree’ in scale. However, we believe that 'moderately' meaning '還' also indicates ‘low degree’ in scale. This is because the sentence with ‘moderately’ meaning '還' and the sentence compared to the sentence are interpreted to have different attribute.
