Abstract
This paper tries to identify the distinctive characteristics of female part-time work in South Korea. Although the statistical sample of this study has a relatively high education level, and high union affiliation rate, the quality of their part-time work is proven to be mixed. The level of job security and social protection is relatively high, but both the wage level, the opportunities for promotion, and the possibilities to switch into full time jobs are low. Hence the results of this study show that the type of their part time work can be classified as ‘precarious’. In terms of the working condition and social protection, the level of their work is mixed. Yet a vast majority of the respondents work rather involuntarily as part-timers, as the results show that they have to accept the job position albeit the severe wage penalty, and despite the fact that many of them wish to work longer hours. In sum, the government policy aimed at promoting women’s labor market integration by allowing them to use part time work for work-family balance has largely failed.
