Abstract
The objective of this paper is to examine the socio-political organization of the soci-eties that constructed wooden coffin tombs in the southeastern region of the Korean Peninsula between approximately the second century BCE and the second century CE. By analyzing the scale of wooden coffin tombs and the geographical distribution of tombs containing prestigious grave goods, this study argues that these societies should be charac- terized not as “states” but as “chiefdoms.” Three major issues are addressed. First, it is noted that many Korean researchers have a strong tendency to emphasize the roles of “migration” and “diffusion” in the emergence of new mortuary systems. How- ever, this paper argues that more attention should be paid to the independent development of indigenous populations, since mortuary systems tend to be among the most conserva- tive cultural practices. Second, the use of numerous terms coined by Korean historians and archaeologists to reflect unique historical and archaeological contexts should be reconsid- ered. In order to facilitate communication with international scholars studying the emer- gence of complex societies, Korean researchers need to adopt theoretical frameworks and terminology developed by neo-evolutionists such as Elman Service. Third, the “hypothetical diagram of the settlement patterns of the Three Han,” widely used by Korean researchers does not correspond well with either the accounts in the San quo Chi or the archaeological record. Although this diagram requires revision, it may be useful to propose an alternative model based on the distribution of prestigious wooden coffin tombs in the study region. Fi- nally, it is emphasized that Korean researchers should adopt a different paradigm that high- lights dynamic human behavior and the mechanisms driving cultural change.
