Abstract

This article examines the life of Lee ManChung, a first-generation independence activist from Seongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do Province, and his practice of the independence movement within the Korean community in Hawaii. Faced with harsh surveillance and oppression during the Japanese colonial period, Lee chose to seek asylum in Hawaii. Initially, he led the anti-Japanese movement primarily in Gyeongsangbuk-do and Gyeongsangnam-do Provinces. He later continued his struggles nationwide. Arrested by the Japanese police, he endured imprisonment before escaping. He then moved to Hawaii after working in Qingdao, China. In Hawaii, he served as a working-level manager, fundraiser, and enlightener for key Korean organizations in the Hawaiian community, including the Korean National Association and the Korean National Unification Promotion Association. He made significant contributions to the organization and operation of Korean organizations, supporting the Provisional Government, remitting funds for the independence movement, and promoting education and welfare within the Korean community. This study addresses the lack of scholarly analysis of Lee ManChung, a native of Gyeongsangbuk-do and a Hawaiian independence activist and practical leader. Unlike previous academic research on the Hawaiian independence movement, which has largely focused on representative leaders and organizational history, this paper comprehensively utilizes decades of data collection by his descendant, Lee Eun-hwan, primary sources such as American newspapers and newsletters, and oral accounts with researchers. This paper empirically elucidates Lee ManChung's domestic and international independence activities, his family's sacrifices, the substantive networks within the Korean community, and the need to restore and commemorate his local history. Notably, this paper is the first to document, based on empirical data, the activities of a forgotten hero and independence activist in exile in Hawaii, a distinction that distinguishes it from previous research and its unique significance. This paper addresses a gap in research on Gyeongsangbukdo Province-born diaspora independence activists in the Americas and provides a concrete foundation for future national merit awards, regional history education, policy and commemorative projects, and academic and social discussions.
