Abstract

This study is about Gyesang Youn, a Korean immigrant who moved to Hawaii during the late Joseon period, devoted himself to education and the national independence movement. Based on his practical awareness of reality, his early activities in Hawaii are closely corresponded with formation of the Korean community in the Hana, Maui island. He was not a prominent figure from the outset, rather a laborer. However, he played a crucial role in laying the foundation of the Korean community. The Korean farm in the Hana region which Gyesang Youn actively participated was the practical foundation for the militant organization such as Powa Hana Union (布哇ハナ連合會) and Kipahulu Militant Organization(キフル ㇴ—軍務部). This foundation eventually enabled Koreans in Hana to expand their field of activity to central Korean Society in Maui. The political turmoil of the Hawaiian branch of Korean National Association in 1915 served as a turning point for Koreans in Maui. The affair brought many prominent figures from the Koreans in Maui into the leadership of Korean Association. Among them, Gyesang Youn took on roles as an educational officer and a teacher at the Korean Women’s Boarding School. In 1918, he was appointed Vice President of the Korean Association Hawaiian branch, and served his role until 1920. In addition, he remained a prominent candidate for the presidency during his term, solidifying his status as a key figure within the organization. The discovery and headstone itself of Gyesang Youn offer several significant insights. First, the discovery of his neglected headstone in Hawaii has led to new discovery of historical records held by his descendants in Korea. His headstone, as it plays a crucial role as a medium with other historical records in Korea, enables reconstructing his overall life. Second, through examination of the geographical characteristics structure of sugar plantations in Maui, it has been revealed that Gyesang Youn contributed to the formation of early Korean community in the Hana region of Maui. In contrast with predominant Korean immigrant studies which focuses on Koreans in Oahu Island, this paper highlights Korean immigrants in Maui. Third, after Gyesang Youn moved his field of activity to Oahu Island, he expanded his educational activities and played a central role in the political turmoil of the Korean Association in Hawaii. Gyesang Youn was a pivotal figure in Korean Association to the point where he was constantly mentioned as candidate for the president and vice president. Through an analysis of his role, this study offers new insights into the political currents of the Korean immigrant community in Hawaii which previously remained obscure. The series of discoveries were initiated with Gyesang Youn’s headsstone at the Holualoa Korean Cemetery. A headstone, as a last record of a personnel, holds significant historical value overcoming the limitations of scarce documentary resources. Yet it has not received sufficient academic attention. While previous studies on the Korean independence movement have primarily focused on people or event-based historical records, it is crucial to look into various source materials such as headstone inscriptions or census data. Continuously exploring new methodologies enables us to reevaluate forgotten independence activists like Gyesang Youn.
