Abstract

Social media encourages voluntary participation of the mass while also accompanying side effects such as exacerbating online abuse, distorting and fabricating information, and creating fake news based on anonymity. These negative effects are frequently associated with political propaganda, particularly in India, which is led by Hindu right-wingers. The activities of Cyber Hindutva have developed through an organised and systematic network centred on Hindu right-wing organisations since the introduction of the Internet in the 1990s. Since the rise of social media in the 2000s, individuals' voluntary online activity has been combined to promote Hindutva propaganda. Their statements echo Hindu cultural nationalism, highlighting the Hindu group's superiority, and alienating non-Hindu groups. However, given the nature of immediacy, diffusion, and collectivity of social media, it is likely to have a greater ripple effect and negative influence than previously. This research attempts to investigate the characteristics and impacts of cyber Hindutva activities currently occurring on Indian social media in light of this awareness of the problem. The group that distorts history and spreads hatred towards opposing groups through online abuse, generating neologism, manipulating images and spreading hatred towards opposing groups is having an impact on Indian society, such as polarising society, increasing public support for Hindu right wings and producing mass equating Hindus with India.
