초록

이 연구의 목적은 COVID-19 확산으로 야기된 국가적 불안과 공포를 파키스탄과 이슬람에 충성하는 내부의 적 무슬림의 ‘코로나지하드’와 연결하여 무슬림 일반을 혐오하고 두려워하는 ‘이슬람 포비아’가 조성되는 양상을 분석하는 데에 있다. 이 연구는 힌두 우익 민족주의 세력이 COVID-19라는 감염병의 공중보건 위기의 원인을 무슬림으로 돌림으로써, 무슬림을 타자화하고 차별하는 이슬람 포비아를 통해 국가의 힌두화라는 정치적 행위를 하는 ‘감염병의 정치화’ 과정을 분석하고 있다. 이 연구는 혁신적인 정보통신기술의 발달에 따라 COVID-19 관련 무슬림에 대한 가짜 뉴스와 허위 정보가 소셜미디어와 뉴스 미디어를 통해 급속히 유포되어 이슬람 포비아의 조성으로 이어질 수 있음을 보여주고 있다. 인도에서 COVID-19는 단순히 국가의 보건 의료 체계가 다루어야 할 감염병이 아니라, 종교에 기반한 정치적 이념을 토대로 인도 우익 정부와 우익세력들이 수행하는 ‘국가의 힌두화’를 위한 정치적 사안이 되었다. COVID-19 대유행 시기에 힌두 정권과 힌두 민족주의 세력에 의해 이처럼 감염병이 정치화되고 있는 것은 힌두 우익의 아이콘 모디가 정권 창출한 이래 인도 사회와 정치가 힌두 우경화로 대전환되는 국면을 극적으로 보여주고 있다.

Abstract

This study aims at exploring how the ‘Islamophobia’ is formed by linking the national anxiety and fear caused by COVID-19 with the so-called ‘CoronaJihad’ of the internal enemy Muslims being loyal to Pakistan and Islam. This study analyzes the process of ‘politicalization of infectious diseases’ in which the Hindu right-wing nationalist forces attribute the cause of the public health crisis of COVID-19 pandemic to Muslims, and act as Hinduization of the country through ‘Islamophobia’ that otherizes and discriminates Muslims. The study shows that with the innovative development of information and communication technologies, fake news and false information about Muslims related to COVID-19 can rapidly spread through social media and news media, leading to the creation of Islamic phobias. In India, COVID-19 is not just an infectious disease to be dealt with by the state’s health care system, but has become a political issue for the “Hinduization of the State” carried out by the Indian right-wing government and right-wing forces based on a political ideology based on religion. The fact that the pandemic is being politicized by the Hindu regime and Hindu nationalist forces during the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically shows the transition of Indian society and politics to the Hindu fundamental trend since the creation of the regime by the right-wing icon Modi.
