이소크라테스는 기원전 5-4세기에 그리스 도시국가들 사이에 만연한 갈등과 전쟁의 문제를 해결하기 위해 범그리스주의를 일관되게 주장하였다. 그리스의 도시국가들은 한마음 한뜻으로 뭉쳐야 하며, 그리스인들의 평화와 안정에 위협이 되는 페르시아를 향해 군사적 원정을 감행해야 한다는 것이다. 이 주장이 최초로 표명된 것은 기원전 380년에 가장 중요하고 인기가 있던 범그리스축제인 올륌피아 제전에서 발표된 『시민 대축전에 부쳐』라는 연설문이었다. 그 연설에서 이소크라테스는 호메로스의 서사시와 트로이아 전쟁의 영웅들을 높이 평가했다. 영웅들은 그리스를 하나로 뭉쳐 트로이아 원정에서 나서 위대한 승리를 거두었고, 호메로스는 그들의 활약을 아름답고 위대한 시에 담아 보여주었기 때문이다. 이런 관점에서 이소크라테스는 헬레네를 고통스럽고 불행한 전쟁의 원인으로서 비난의 대상으로 취급하지 않고, 찬양의 대상으로 부각하는 연설문 『헬레네 찬가』를 내놓았다. 그는 이 연설문에서 헬레네 덕택에 그리스 전체가 하나로 뭉칠 수 있었고 위대한 승리를 거둘 수 있었다고 평가한 것이다. 그의 마지막 대중연설인 『전 아테네인 축전에 부쳐』에서는 아가멤논을 찬양하는 글을 삽입하여 그리스 통합과 페르시아 원정을 이끌 제2의 아가멤논의 등장을 촉구했다. 이와 같이 이소크라테스는 그리스의 분열과 페르시아의 위협이라는 당대의 상황을 극복하기 위해 트로이아 전쟁 신화를 수사학적으로 활용하였다. 그는 트로이아 전쟁에 관한, 특히 헬레네와 아가멤논에 관한 기존의 부정적 편견을 지우고 새로운 의미를 덧붙였다. 그는 당대 시민들과 지도자들로부터 긍정적인 호응을 얻어냈던 것 같은데, 실제로 마케도니아의 알렉산드로스의 페르시아 원정에서 이소크라테스의 이상이 실현된 것을 볼 수 있다.
Abstract
Isocrates consistently insisted on Panhellenism in order to solve the problem of the conflict and war between Greek city-states that was rampant in 5-4C BC. He asserted that all the Greek city-states should be united among themselves and then go on a military expedition to Persians who would unceasingly pose a major threat to the peace and safety of Greeks. This opinion was first asserted in his discourse Panegyricus spoken at the most important and popular panhellenic festival Olympiad in 380 BC. In this speech, Isocrates highly appreciated Homeric epics and heros of the Trojan war. The heros united all the Greeks and then went on the expedition to Troy in Asia Minor, and finally won a great victory; Homer showed their magnificent exploits in his monumental beautiful poems. From the same viewpoint, Isocrates delivered the Encomium of Helen in which he did not treat her as a target of censure, as the cause of the painful and tragic war, but extolled; due to her, all the Greeks could be united and achieve a great victory over the barbarians. In his last public speech Panathenaicus, Isocrates inserted ‘Encomium of Agamemnon’ and urged that a second Agamemnon should unite all the Greeks once again and go on an expedition to Persians. In this way, Isocrates rhetorically used the myth of Trojan war to find out a way out of the actual wretched situation where Greek city-states were split and consistently threatened by Persians. He eliminated negative prejudices against Trojan war, especially against Helen and Agamemnon, and added new significance on them. It seems that he received positive response from contemporary Greek citizens and leaders; in fact, we can see his political idea realized in the Macedonian king Alexander’s expedition to Persians.
