Abstract
This paper aims to present the view of Gorgias on the power of logos in his Encimium of Helen. This Gorgias' work can be classified as a practice boklet in which Gorgias intends to show the power of persuasion by rebutting the common view on Helen that she is culpable of her deed. By analysing Gorgias' arguments of probability n this work, which is different from those of Defence of Palamedes, this paper seeks to show that under certain condition Gorgias' claim of truth could be sustained. Although it could hardly be said that Gorgias pursues the truth for it's own sake, his probability argument shows that he uses it in view of persuasion with the claim of truth and this claim need not be denied on all circumstances. Plato's verdict on Gorgias in his Gorgias, that the Gorgias' rhetoric could not be a true knowledge but at best be a guesswork, is in a sense true but it can also be safely said that the Aristotelean rhetoric is in full preparation already in Gorgias' works.
