小稿は、1938年に北星堂から出版された英訳日本昔話『Iwaya Sazanami's Japanese Fairy Tales』について、書誌情報を確認することで、出版の目的及び背景を明らかにするものである。同書の装訂や、北星堂による出版活動の特色から、次の3点を明らかにした。 (1)『Iwaya Sazanami's Japanese Fairy Tales』が、欧米諸国に対して日本が有する伝統的な製本技術と、最新の印刷技術とを伝える和装本として出版されたこと (2)1930年代の北星堂は、自社が優れた印刷・製本技術を有する出版社であると、欧米諸国に対して顕示していたこと (3)1934年以降、日本政府は欧米諸国に対する日本文化の紹介を推奨しており、北星堂による『Iwaya Sazanami's Japanese Fairy Tales』の出版もまた、当時の政府の方針に沿った企画であったこと
Abstract
This paper elucidates the objectives behind publishing Iwaya Sazanami’s Japanese Fairy Tales, an English translation of Japanese fairy tales, which was published in 1938 by Hokuseido. The binding for this translation and the characteristics distinguishing Hokuseido reveal three points: (1) Iwaya Sazanami's Japanese Fairy Tales was published to teach people in Western countries about traditional Japanese bookbinding methods and the latest Japanese printing technologies. (2) In the 1930s, Hokuseido was well regarded by people in Western countries as a publisher offering excellent printing technologies. (3) Around 1934, the Japanese government recommended activities to introduce Japanese culture to people in Western countries. Hokuseido’s publication of Iwaya Sazanami’s Japanese Fairy Tales was a project aligned with the Japanese government policy of the time.
