Abstract

The metaphor of “code” has been central in the history of molecular biology since 1950s, which has shaped how molecular biologists study life, and further transformed life sciences as a discipline that is closely aligned with information sciences. As the methological and epistemological orientations of these two disciplines converge, biological phenomena could be reconceived as a kind of information processes. Recently, researchers proposed to use DNA as a “digital data storage” in which digital data are stored in the biological molecules of DNA. Here, DNA, once conceived as the central object of biological inquiry, emerges as a novel technical object that stores digital data that are not necessarily associated with biological processes. This article explores the epistemological, technical, and cultural contexts through which DNA is refigured as a medium for storing data. I discuss how the concept of DNA digital data storage could emerge in relation to the notion of “genetic code” that can be converted into digital codes and technologies that have enabled this conversion. The idea that DNAs and digital data have two different code systems that allow conversion between biological molecules and digital codes render “code” as something immaterial. Yet, the notion of DNA digital data storage also highlights that codes need material substrates onto which they can be inscribed, which has become more conspcious in the era of big data than ever. Focusing on the concept of DNA as a code and scientific practices surrounding this notion, I draw attention to the double processes in which the materiality of digital information comes to matter, while biological life is increasingly imagined as an immaterial information process.
