Abstract
CRISPR/CAS9 technology is capable of modifying specific genes more accurately than ever before. It is actively applied to a variety of life forms, including agricultural products all over the world. Being aware of the continuing controversy regarding the safety of existing GMOs, experts use the metaphorical expressions of ‘editing’ or ‘targeting,’ rather than ‘modification,’ to promote smooth social acceptance of the technology. In Korea, attempts are being made to propagate the expression of ‘gene proofreading or correction’ in public. In addition, it is actively argued that the agricultural products to which the technology is applied are safe, such as products made by traditional breeding, including radiation breeding. In this process, the accuracy of the CRISPR/CAS9 technology and the capability of biological improvements are emphasized, while the possibilities of technical defects, such as off-target effects, and more various applications are hidden. As advanced biotechnology continues to be developed in the face of social controversy, the critical review of the metaphorical expression must continue.
