본 논문은 한국어 종결어미 ‘-네’와 ‘-구나’를 ‘지식의 출처’ 관점에서 분석하여 ‘-네’는 ‘지각’을 통해 화자가 새로운 지식을 습득하고 ‘-구나’는 지각, 사유, 증언 등 어느 하나의 출처에 한정되지 않고 포괄적인 방식으로 새로운 지식을 습득했음을 의미한다고 주장한다. 다시 말해 ‘-네’는 지식의 출처 유형에서 지각으로 명시화되어 있지만 ‘-구나’는 어느 하나의 유형으로 명시되어 있지 않다는 것이다. 또 하나의 차이점으로 ‘-네’는 ‘화자의 지각’ 그 자체에 초점이 주어져 명제를 표현하지만 ‘-구나’는 지각이나 사유 등 지식 습득방식에 초점이 주어지는 것이 아니라 그러한 방식을 통해 화자가 명제를 인지했다는데 즉 ‘화자의 인식’에 초점을 둔다는데 있다고 주장한다. 또한 증거성 개념과 관련해서도 화자의 지각을 표현하는 ‘-더-’나 ‘-네’는 증거성과 직접적으로 연결되어 있지만 ‘-구나’의 경우는 지각뿐만 아니라 다양한 지식의 출처를 허용하기에 증거성 의미를 표현할 수도 있지만 증거성에 반드시 국한되어 있지 않음을 시사한다.
Abstract
This paper analyzes the Korean sentence-final suffixes -ney and -kwuna in terms of the sources of knowledge in epistemology, arguing that a -ney sentence is used to describe what the speaker perceives at the moment of utterance, whereas a -kwuna sentence is used to convey not only what (s)he perceives, but also what (s)he reasons or hears from others. In other words, -ney is specified as 'perception' in terms of the source of knowledge, whereas -kwuna is unspecified, allowing any type of knowledge source. Furthermore, the paper suggests that while a -ney sentence only focuses on the moment of perception, a -kwuna sentence focuses not on the source itself but the end result, i.e. the speaker's cognition of new knowledge.
