Abstract

This study aims to examine what causes the difference in meaning between ‘-guna’ and ‘-ne.’ For the examination, this study used a research method that differentiates grammar category from semantic category, and showed that grammar category should be used as a standard point for the meaning analysis of ‘-guna’ and ‘-ne.’ In addition, this study also used a research method that differentiate utterance situation from utterance sentence, and showed that utterance situation should be used as a standard point for the meaning analysis of ‘-guna’ and ‘-ne.’By using these methods, first, this study found that the sentence-final endings of ‘-guna’ and ‘-ne’ are both used when a speaker talks to himself or herself. Next, this study also found that, “whether a speaker has interest in a combined proposition” is an important criterion for differentiating between ‘-guna’ and ‘-ne. More specifically, ‘-guna’ is used when a speaker does not has an interest in a combined proposition (unbiased position), whereas ‘-ne’ is used when a speaker has an interest in a combined proposition (biased position). This study is meaningful because it provides an opportunity to reconsider the current trend of meaning analysis which uses ‘evidentiality,’ ‘inference,’ or ‘perception’ for the interpretations of the difference in meaning between ‘-guna’ and ‘-ne.’
