Abstract
This study examines presenteeism among solo self-employed workers. Recognizing the heterogeneity within this group, independent and dependent self-employed workers are distinguished to analyze their experiences and influencing factors. Using data from the 7th Korean Working Conditions Survey (2023) conducted by the Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency, binary logistic regression analysis is employed to explore the determinants of presenteeism. The analysis showed that solo self-employed workers were more likely to work while sick than wage workers; however, this difference was not statistically significant after controlling for other factors. Among solo self-employed workers, independent self-employed exhibit significantly higher levels of presenteeism than their dependent self-employed. Key factors associated with presenteeism include income level, household economic conditions, work time pressure, overtime demands, job control, autonomy over rest breaks, and job engagement. Notably, the determinants of presenteeism differ between independent and dependent self-employed workers. For independent self-employed individuals, economic factors such as income and household financial stability play a more significant role, whereas for dependent self-employed workers, factors related to adaptation to new changes, and autonomy over the workplace are more influential. Based on these findings, this study highlights the need for improving the working conditions of solo self-employed workers, strengthening social protection, and ensuring the implementation and stabilization of sickness benefits.
