본 연구는 특수교육 연구에서 현상학의 의의와 과제를 탐구하기 위해 철학적 이론과 연구방법으로서 현상학의 전개 과정과 그 영향을 검토하였다. 연구 결과, 특수교육 현상의 본질적이고 실제적인 문제를 해명하기 위해서는 현상학이 다음과 같은 방향으로 전개될 필요가 있다. 첫째, 후설, 하이데거, 메를로-퐁티 등 현상학자의 철학적 사유를 정확히 이해하고 이를 특수교육 연구에 적절히 적용해야 한다. 둘째, 외국 학자들의 연구 방법을 무비판적으로 수용하기보다 연구 주제와 유형에 따라 현상학적 방법을 비판적으로 선택하고 활용해야 한다. 셋째, 특수교육현상을 구체적으로 분석하고 실천적 문제 해결에 기여하기 위해서는 응용현상학으로의 정립이 필요하다. 이 때 현상학은 학문 전체의 구조 속에서 경험적, 존재론적, 초월론적 층위를 기준으로 분석되어야 하며, 이를 통해 특수교육 현상학의 구조적 위상을 구분하고 특수교육 연구에 적용하는 작업이 요구된다. 이러한 과정을 거쳐 현상학은 특수교육 현상의 본질적 의미를 심층적으로 탐구할 수 있는 이론적 기반이자 질적 연구 방법으로 자리매김할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
This study explores the significance and challenges of phenomenology in special education research by examining its philosophical foundations and methodological developments. The findings indicate that phenomenology needs to be developed in the following directions to clarify the essential and practical issues of special education phenomena. First, the philosophical insights of classical phenomenologists such as Husserl, Heidegger, and Merleau-Ponty should be accurately understood and appropriately applied to special education research. Second, rather than uncritically adopting the methods of foreign scholars, phenomenological approaches should be critically selected and utilized according to research topics and types. Third, in order to analyze special education phenomena concretely and contribute to practical problem-solving, it is necessary to establish phenomenology as applied phenomenology. In this process, phenomenology should be analyzed within the overall academic structure at the empirical, ontological, and transcendental levels, thereby distinguishing the structural status of phenomenology in special education and applying it systematically. Through such efforts, phenomenology can be positioned as both a theoretical foundation and a qualitative research method for in-depth inquiry into the essential meaning of special education phenomena.
