Abstract
The purpose of this study is to explore instructional strategies for improving pseudo- serendipity. The word pseudo-serendipity was coined by Royston M. Roberts(1989) to describe accidental discoveries of ways to achieve an end sought for, in contrast to the meaning of true serendipity, which describes accidental discoveries of things not sought for. More specifically, the study investigates the followings; ① the characteristics of creative person who seems to be ideal for the purpose of education, ② the definition and origin of serendipity, and the idiosyncratic personality features of serendipitous persons, and ③ instructional conditions and strategies for improving pseudo-serendipity. The study proposes the followings; ① School should be oriented into educating a self-actualized creative person rather than a special talented creative person. According to various studies, most special talented creative persons are somehow neurotic. ② Serendipity must be one of the most influential factors in making historic achievements possible. In addition, many serendipitous persons have some peculiar personalities such as insight, prepared mind, strong curiosity, and perception. ③ As favorable instructional conditions and strategies for improving pseudo-serendipitous, teachers need to provide students with opportunities of trying various ways of looking at the problem, allowing creativity, and posing various types of different problems even though it seems to be impossible for them to find proper solutions at the moment.
