본 연구는 인식 주체의 자발적인 질문이 교육의 맥락에서 핵심적인 의미를 가진다는 것을 전제로, 질문 생성의 요건을 살펴보고, 질문 창출을 위한 의도적 노력의 의의와 한계를 분석하였다. 교육적 질문은 ‘변칙과 불일치의 인식’, ‘언어적 구조화’, 그리고 ‘문제해결의 의지’ 등의 조건이 갖추어졌을 때에만 비로소 생성될 수 있으며, 그만큼 가치도 크다고 할 수 있다. 질문을 창출하기 위한 의도적 노력은 끊임없는 자기교정의 기제가 되고, 선택과 집중을 수반한 지적 긴장을 통해 지속적인 재구조화를 촉진하며, 나아가 주체적 능동적 탐구의 원동력의 역할을 하는 등의 중요한 의의를 가진다고 할 수 있다. 그런데 질문은 논리적인 알고리듬적 절차를 따르면 으레 얻게 되거나, 자유자재로 그 산출을 조정할 수 있는 것이 아니라는 점에서 의식적이고 의도적인 노력은 의의와 동시에 불가피한 한계를 지닌다. 자발적 구조변형의 애로, 암묵지의 명시화 촉구로 인한 혼란, 그리고 교육적 기다림의 내재율 등을 중심으로 그 한계를 논의하였다. 끝으로 여러 난점들을 극복하고 새로운 질문을 창출해내기 위해서는 비합리, 상상력, 직관, 우연, 실수 등의 돌파기제를 적극적으로 초대하고 활용할 필요가 있음을 제안하였다.
