조이스는 폐지론과 보존론을 비판하고 허구론을 대안으로 주장한다. 나는 허구론의 가능성과 한계를 검토하고 보완점을 제시하려고 한다. (1) 조이스는 허구론이 도덕 신념의 편익을 일정 부분 확보하고 인식론적 비용을 줄이는 데 적합한 모델이라고 주장하지만, 이 주장에는 여러 난점이 있다. (2) 허구론은 가장된 도덕 신념의 규범성을 옹호하는 과정에서 도덕 신념을 가장하기 위해서 비판적 사고를 강조하고, 도덕 신념의 편익을 확보하기 위해서 일상적 사고를 강조하는 이중적 요구를 한다. (3) 허구론이 비판적 사고를 강조하더라도 도덕적 습관의 영향으로 인해 도덕의 규범성이 훼손될 우려는 적지만, 일상적 사고를 강조하게 되면 가장된 도덕 신념이 도덕 신념으로 귀결될 우려가 있다. (4) 맥락에 따라 도덕 신념의 비용과 편익이 달라지지만 대체로 도덕 신념의 편익이 비용을 능가한다는 조이스의 주장은 경험적인 주장으로 그 진위가 불확실하다. (5) 가장된 도덕 신념이 도덕 신념으로 귀결되면 맥락에 따라 도덕 신념의 비용이 커질 때 도덕 신념의 비용을 조절하기 어려워진다. (6) 가장된 도덕 신념이 도덕 신념으로 귀결되는 것을 막기 위해서는 비판적 사고를 강화할 필요가 있는데, 그 결과 허구론은 자기감시를 지속하게 된다. (7) 허구론은 우리가 비판적 사고로 들어갈 권한을 가진다고 주장하지만, 그렇게 된다면 자기 감시 비용을 줄이기 어렵다. (8) 폐지론적 허구론은 맥락에 따른 비용을 고려하여 도덕 신념의 가장 자체마저도 멈춰야 할 때가 있다는 점을 인정하지만, 도덕의 규범성이 훼손될 우려가 있다. (9) 일상적 사고에서 도덕 신념의 비용이 커질 때만 일상적 사고에서 비판적 사고로의 전환이 일어나는 것으로 이해함으로써 비판적 사고가 작동할 때 발생하는 자기감시 비용을 줄일 수 있다.
Abstract
Joyce criticizes abolitionism and conservationism and argues that fictionalism is an alternative. I will review the possibilities and limitations of fictionalism and present complementary points. (1) Joyce argues that fictionalism is a suitable model for securing some of the benefits of moral beliefs and reducing epistemological costs, but there are several problems with this argument. (2) In the process of defending the normativity of make-believed moral beliefs, fictionalism emphasizes critical thinking to make-believe moral beliefs and emphasizes ordinary thinking to secure the benefits of moral beliefs. (3) Even if fictionalism emphasizes critical thinking, there is little concern that moral normativity will be undermined by the influence of moral habits, but if ordinary thinking is emphasized, make-believed moral beliefs may result in moral beliefs. (4) The cost and benefits of moral beliefs vary depending on the context, but Joyce's argument that the benefits of moral beliefs generally outweigh costs is an empirical argument and its authenticity is uncertain. (5) When make-believed moral beliefs result in moral beliefs, it becomes difficult to control the cost of moral beliefs when the cost of moral beliefs increases depending on the context. (6) In order to prevent make-believed moral beliefs from leading to moral beliefs, it is necessary to strengthen critical thinking, and as a result, fictionalism continues to self-surveillance. (7) Fictionalism argues that we have the authority to enter critical thinking, but that makes it difficult to reduce the cost of self-surveillance. (8) abolitionistic fictionalism admits that there are times when even the most of moral beliefs must stop considering the cost of context, but there is a high risk that the normativity of morality will be undermined. (9) By understanding the transition from ordinary thinking to critical thinking only when the cost of morality increases, the cost incurred when critical thinking operates can be reduced.
